9th Sunday in Ordinary 2008I am sure you have come across that person who says one thing and does another. I will meet you in half and hour and turns up two hours later. They might borrow money with a promise that it will be returned and you never see it. They promise that they will keep your secret but blab it out to others. They say that they will never do something and yet fall into doing the same thing all over again. We have all met that person who says one thing and does another. They might be well intentioned, but they never quite do it, they are not very reliable. Is that not the kind of person that Jesus is speaking about. Instead, the person that he would like us to be is the one who is consistent, the one who does what they say that they will do, this is the person that he is looking for. Don’t we all know that problem: inconsistent, unreliable, we blow with the wind. We would all like to be a steady eddi, somebody who can be relied on to see something through the end but we know how weak we are. We set out to do something but get blown off course. We know that we should like to be like a solid building, built on strong foundations. We know that we should like to be like a strong tree with deep roots. We end up building our house on sand. There is a simple message for faith here. See things through to the end. Finish what you start. Do what you are asked to do. Be reliable. Intercessions 9 OT APriestGod is ever faithful, His love is constant - mindful of this, we pray for all our intentions IntercessorWe pray that others may rely on people of faith, especially when they walk in darkness Lord hear usWe pray that we may be people who see things right through to the end – especially charity and support for others. Lord hear usWe pray that we may always practice what we preach, especially forgiveness. Lord hear usWe pray that we may never tire or turn aside from the road of discipleship Lord hear usFor people in China and Burma that people may not tire of helping them Lord hear usFor people who have died, especially Neil Kielty, Alex Hunt and Anthony Reilly and all that we are asked to remember in prayer. Lord hear usPriestYou son came on earth. Your son healed the sick. He calmed the storm. He brought peace to the troubled. He died and the cross and rose from the dead. He completed the work that you gave him to do. May our work not be unfinished, incomplete, may we see things right through to the end, persevere in all trials. Top Comment on this Homily |
